Auto Body Repair and Maintenance Tips for Fall
Winter in Seattle is notoriously rainy and cold, sometimes with a few snow showers here and there. As the rain comes down and temperatures drop, driving conditions become increasingly dangerous. Before winter sets in, it’s best to take some precautions when it comes to your vehicle to ensure your safety and to avoid any auto collisions.
Here are some of our top tips for safe driving this winter that will help you avoid costly repairs on your vehicle:
Slow Down While Turning and Approaching Traffic Lights
Wet or icy pavement can cause any driver to lose control of their vehicle. Both skidding and sliding (also known as hydroplaning) are common causes for collisions during the winter months. On exceedingly rainy days, hydroplaning may be difficult to avoid, but breaking slowly and early may help prevent collisions with other cars and obstacles on the road.
Keep a Safe Distance Between Your Car and the Car Ahead of You
It’s always a good idea to leave a decent amount of space between your car and the car ahead of you, but this is especially true with less than ideal weather conditions. In general, it is recommended that drivers maintain a 2 to 3 second distance between their car and the car ahead of them. However, rain and snow can be difficult for visibility and traction, so it’s best to increase this amount to be on the safe side.
Be Extra Vigilant of Your Surroundings, Including Pedestrians and Other Vehicles
Even if you’re paying close attention to the road, it doesn’t mean that everyone else is. Other vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists can all be distracted on the road and pose a hazard to drivers. Make sure to frequently check your mirrors, indicate lane changes early, and wipe your windshield completely clear of snow and ice before driving.
Use Snow Chains During Snowy Conditions
It isn’t uncommon for snow to arrive in Seattle during the winter, so make sure that you have some snow chains handy! Snow chains help your tires gain traction on the pavement after snowfall, reducing your risk of collision. Putting snow chains on your tires during icy road conditions can also increase traction, but keep in mind that you will have to greatly reduce your driving speed with snow chains on (no faster than 30mph).
